My computer says I have an update pending (Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586), and keeps shutting it down every night to restart. However, the updates never actually install. My computer restarts, I select Windows to boot up through GRUB, and then the blue installation screen flashes for a couple milliseconds before loading the login screen. Manually restarting gives the same results.

I cannot schedule the updates for a different time in the Settings program even though I have 'Notify to schedule restart' selected. Forcing the setting through gpedit.msc (as seen here) does not make a difference. Is there any way I can troubleshoot my install to make my computer actually installs the update when restarting?

Have you tried re-downloading the updates? I noticed Windows 10 sometimes got stuck in the process of downloading or installing updates.

To do this, you need to completely remove all the downloaded update files.

• First of all, you need to temporarily disable the Windows Update service (Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services, then look for 'Windows Update', right click - properties, Stop service, and just put it to Disabled on startup type, just to make sure)
• Now you need to find the location of the downloaded update files, which is in C:WindowsSoftware Distribution folder.
• Delete the entire content of the folder (or, if you want to be secure, back it up first somewhere else). This will delete all the downloaded update files and windows update history. Don't worry, this WON'T delete your installed updates.
• Now that you've deleted it, turn the Windows Update service back
• At least reboot your Windows once, before trying the update process again.

This method has worked twice on my Windows 10 Home, when it got stuck in downloading and installing the updates.

Did you try creating a 1511 update install ISO? You can boot them to do fresh installs, but I also used mine to install 1511 without using Windows Update.

Currently, since this is the pending task for installing update, it will force to restart to install and configure, please try to remove pending.xml under winsxs folder on your PC and try the GP with 4 option 'Schedule download and install'

We finally have the redundancy in place to put all of our servers on an automatic, staggered monthly reboot schedule. I also have a WSUS server and a group policy that points them to a Servers group on it. Up to this point, we've been manually installing updates on servers.

I'm trying to implement Group Policy to automate patch management like so:

1. Every Patch Tuesday, a sysadmin approves updates for the Servers group on the WSUS server that were published on the last Patch Tuesday (we want our servers to be 30 days behind on patches except for the test servers).
2. The servers download and install the updates automatically, but should sit at a pending reboot state.
3. When the server's scheduled reboot time rolls around, the server automatically reboots, thus completing the pending update process.

My issue is with the Configure Automatic Updates policy. The policy has four options (curiously numbered 2-5 instead of 1-4). Option 3 automatically downloads the updates but a sysadmin has to choose to install them. Option 4 automatically downloads and installs them, but wants to reboot the server automatically as well.

Looking at the other options, I only see three other policies concerning reboots:

• Always automatically restart at the scheduled time. This only affects Server 2012 and we have a bunch of 2008 R2 servers as well.
• Delay restart for scheduled installations. This policy can delay a reboot, but requires you to enter a value > 0 into the box.
• No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations. This only blocks reboots if a user is logged in.

So how do I direct Windows Update to automatically download AND install updates, but not reboot the server?

Interestingly enough, I'm working on a very similar project for a client.

Unfortunately, there isn't any way to download and install the updates and hold a pending required reboot. What you can do is download the updates and use a third party utility or VB script or Powershell script to install the updates and hold the pending required reboot. We've opted to use a Powershell script.
